Many of my paintings are unfinished. My approach to painting has always been to make many starts, and if they turn out failed or unfinished, then at least I know what not to do next time. It seems the less I try to make my paintings what I think they should be, the better they come out. My best paintings are spontaneous and accidental. I usually don’t like them as soon as they are finished, but after weeks of ignoring them I am shocked by how much I love them.
